Everyone says retail is dying. I guess "they" have not been looking around New York City. As landlords get greedy and push rents up, a new breed of designers and retailers are getting creative. Collective spaces and indoor markets are springing up all over the city. Shop Local is the byword. Jewelry and clothing, made locally or vintage, tees and teas, cosmetics, bags, home decor, sneaker exchanges, bags, record exchanges and even art. Don't leave out the Foodies either. No Brands allowed. Plant a seed and a new business will grow. See which ones you can find.
As Summer is moving towards Fall, designers are offering tempting new shopping options with cool clothes and visuals to match. Uptown or Downtown they are yours to experience in New York.
Calvin Klein is now Calvin Klein 205W39NYC. The artistic collaboration on the flagship store is as avant-garde as the clothing. Experience the new Madison Avenue store. The collab with LA artist Sterling Ruby is done in construction yellow to signal that it is a work in progress. Mixed among the clothes are some symbols of what Raf Simons has discovered in America and loves. Quilts, and a variety of interesting USA centric constructions. A big change from the oh so minimal Pawson designed store.
Should you happen to be in the Garment Center what used to be called 205 W 39 St the Calvin show space has been redesigned and rebranded. The duo conceived a similar minimalist pipe construction through the windows- this in a very deep grey, and the bottom of the outside of the building has been repainted to match, and renamed 205W39NYC. Maybe we can see more of the inside during NYC Fashion Week. Looking forward to seeing the defile.
The new Off White c/o Virgil Abloh store brings a fresh look to streetwear luxe. The designer, who cut his teeth as the creative director for Kayne West, opened his line in Milan. A New York outpost just opened in Soho. It is already buzzing with customers and gawkers. Named the EM PTY Gallery, the space is a concrete shell filled with fall leaves, chirping birds and a Home Depot decor. This is the first NY store- there are already stores in Asia, each with a different theme. There are finds for men and women. The clothes are are as cool as the design.
When you are shopping downtown it is always an adventure. You never know what you are going to find… Photo shoots around so many corners. Product shoots? Influencers? Who knows. But always fun to watch how images are created. Some are small shoots, and some come with large shoot teams. From streetwear to Gucci coats- you never know what you will find.
